Sufism is a way of life in which a deeper identity is discovered and lived. This deeper identity, beyond the already known personality, is in harmony with all that exists. This deeper identity, or essential self, has abilities of awareness, action, creativity and love that are far beyond the abilities of the superficial personality. Eventually it is understood that these abilities belong to a greater life and being which we individualize in our own unique way while never being separate from it.

As Gurdjieff's methods are complex and hardly work without a charismatic leader, some of his teachings where adapted and integrated into the work of others.

The basis of Subud is a spiritual exercise called the latihan kejiwaan, which was said by Muhammad Subuh to represent guidance from "the Power of God" or "the Great Life Force".

Gurdjieff developed & described a method to awaken higher state of consciousness and achieve full human potential. Attempting to do so, calling the discipline "The Work" or "the System".
According to his principles and instructions, Gurdjieff's method for awakening one's consciousness unites the methods of the fakir, monk and yogi, and thus he referred to it as the "Fourth Way" .

Jean Gebser was a philosopher, a linguist, and a poet, who described the structures of human consciousness. Gebser's major thesis was that human consciousness is in transition, and that these transitions are "mutations" and not continuous.
