In information theory and statistics, negentropy is used as a measure of distance to normality. The concept and phrase "negative entropy" was introduced by Erwin Schrödinger in his 1944 popular-science book What is Life? Later, Léon Brillouin shortened the phrase to negentropy. In 1974, Albert Szent-Györgyi proposed replacing the term negentropy with syntropy. That term may have originated in the 1940s with the Italian mathematician Luigi Fantappiè, who tried to construct a unified theory of biology and physics. Buckminster Fuller tried to popularize this usage, but negentropy remains common.

The entropy of an object is a measure of the amount of energy which is unavailable to do work. Entropy is also a measure of the number of possible arrangements the atoms in a system can have. In this sense, entropy is a measure of uncertainty or randomness.

Subud is an international spiritual movement that began in Indonesia in the 1920s, founded by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo . The basis of Subud is a spiritual exercise called the latihan kejiwaan, which was said by Muhammad Subuh to represent guidance from "the Power of God" or "the Great Life Force".

Concepts such as "life force" existed from antiquity and emerged from the debate over vitalism in the 18th and 19th centuries. They continued to be discussed in the 20th century by some thinkers and practitioners in the modern New Age and Neo Sufism movement.

Consciousness at its simplest is "sentience or awareness of internal or external existence. To most philosophers, the word "consciousness" connotes the relationship between the mind and the world. But of course there exist many spiritual approaches to define consciousness.
